The fables are not what they seem - the simplest animal takes the place of master. Around 1904, the great illustrator Benjamin Rabier, already famous for his numerous animal drawings, began work on what would become his most important work: the Fables of Jean de La Fontaine, a classic of world literature. One will of course find the original text of 240 fables, in accordance with the collections of 1668-1678. All are illustrated and told in pictures, through three to six drawings by Rabier. The illustrated staging facilitates the understanding of the language of the seventeenth century, which is sometimes difficult to access today. But the designer, just like the fabulist, appeals to everyone, young and old. By his genius for composition,
