Lucebert (Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk Amsterdam 1924 - Alkmaar 1994) was a Dutch artist who first became known as the poet of the CoBrA movement. From an early age he was interested in both literature and art, with a fascination for German romantic poetry, modern painting (Picasso, Klee, Ernst) and comic strips.
The influence of the latter is still clearly visible in the caricatural and cartoon-like character of his drawings and paintings.
In the 1950s, Lucebert became a nationally renowned visual artist and perhaps the best-known poet of his generation. He won four impressive oeuvre prizes for his poetry and his verse “everything of value is defenseless” is part of the collective memory of the Dutch.
He then devoted himself to painting for a few more decades, at first in the childish CoBrA style, but in the first half of the sixties he made his most beautiful and impressive paintings, in which fairytale and mythical, sometimes terrifying creatures appear.
In his later work, he has distorted characters and fantasy creatures, drawn up in powerful contours, depict scenes and tell their stories. In this work by Lucebert, mother and child are clearly recognizable, but their shapes are divided into areas of color. His influences growing up, such as Picasso and comic books, are clearly reflected in this work.
