After studying to become a concert pianist and Dutch, Barend Roest Crollius worked as a literary journalist for Algemeen Dagblad and Elseviers Weekblad. In 1935 he made his debut with the anti-Nazi Chronicle of a Youthful Sin . A year later, his anti-Hitler novel Distant Disaster and the novel Land of Desire were published. After the Second World War, Jan Greshoff brought Roest Crollius to the public's attention as a critic. Various books followed in which different themes were discussed. In 1963, his epistolary novel Objectionable Testimony was awarded the Marianne Philips Prize. In 1972, Roest Crollius decided to stop writing for good and only draw and paint.
