Between 1970 and 1980, I had frequent contact with Peter Thijs (born in Heeze in 1950), who was then bursting onto the art scene like a rocket. He won the Royal Grant for Painting in both 1976 and 1977, the Ostend European Painting Prize in 1977 and 1979, and the Willink van Collen Prize in 1979. Between 1974 and 1982, his work traveled in various exhibitions offered by the Ministry of Culture, Culture and Sport to cultural centers throughout the country. Whenever he exhibited, his work was always sold within an hour. Banks and large corporations invested in Peter Thijs's art.
And then, in 1982, he suddenly became a drawing and printmaking instructor at the Eindhoven Academy, now the Design Academy Eindhoven. He did design work for a publishing house and continued to accept commissions as a graphic designer and illustrator/painter, but for several decades, he hardly painted independently.
