Pierre Alechinsky’s abstract expressionisme en zijn schilderijen met groteske en fantastische figuren zijn duidelijk beïnvloed door het surrealisme en de technieken van de Amerikaanse Action Painting. Na zijn ontmoeting met Christian Dotremont, één van de stichters van de CoBrA-groep, sluit Alechinsky zich in 1949 aan bij deze kunstvernieuwende strekking. Hij draagt veel bij tot de verwezenlijking van het tijdschrift 'CoBrA'. Met Dotremont was Alechinsky de spil van de Belgische tak van CoBrA. In 1951 organiseert hij de 2de internationale tentoonstelling van experimentele CoBrA-kunst in het Palais Des Beaux-Arts van Luik.
