Rob Scholte (born Amsterdam, 1958) is the king of copyright . Images from art and advertising, but also from everyday life, form the basis for his paintings. Without being ashamed, he uses existing images, which he appropriates himself through adequate additions, adaptations and context shifts. He makes unexpected connections and juggles with the meaning. Originality and property rights are, it seems, of no importance to him. Reproduction in all forms characterizes Scholte's art and it is precisely these reproductions that ensure that his work reaches a large audience. “The most reproduced artwork is therefore the most important,” he once said. Museum de Fundatie Zwolle shows an extensive overview of his paintings.
Rob Scholte is the indispensable exponent of the turbulent 1980s. His paintings contribute to the new reappraisal of figurative painting after modernism, although that does not exclude abstraction at all for Rob Scholte. His art is as idealistic as it is commercial, as alternatively critical as it is slickly kitschy, ironic and deadly serious, and above all always, as a common thread, paradoxical. Rob Scholte is undeniably the most discussed living Dutch artist, belonging to the international postmodernist movement. Historical themes, literary references, the use of irony, the play of truth and falsehood, lack of style, as well as the clashing of quotes from 'high' and 'low' culture are characteristic of the 21st century spirit. Like no other, Scholte marks the transition from modern to postmodern. The theme of his oeuvre is the difference between unplugged and connected. His painting seems old-fashioned compared to a computer, but it also flourishes wonderfully online.
