Toon Koster, an artist who cannot be placed in a certain art-historical movement. His own style that is immediately recognizable characterizes his works. The Hague and Amsterdam schools were of influence. The generous skies of Weissenbruch, the loose touch of Breitner and the dark palette of the Belgian expressionist Permeke can be found in his work. Around 1934 he studied at the Rotterdam art academy under Johannes Heijberg and Willem van Dort. Toon Koster exhibited in the Gemeentemuseum Apeldoorn, in the Katwijks museum and a group exhibition in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. In 1962 Koster created a famous mural in the Anthonius School in NOORDEN, where he also lived for several years. The school was demolished in 2012, but the painting was cut out and transferred to the Schippersbrug apartment complex. This initiative was initiated by the citizens and the municipality and cost € 30,000, proof that this artist was highly valued. The majority of his works were created around NIEUWKOOP, where he lived for fifty years. Yet he also made foreign trips between 1935 and 1938, among others to Algeria, where one of the few paintings originates such as the above work. Galerie K is therefore proud to present this work.
