  • Beautiful pastel chalk on paper "Amsterdam - skinny bridge over the Amstel" by the "Larense school" painter Willem Knip. Signed lower right in pencil. The pastel was made by Knip around 1930 and is in reasonably good condition. Has previously been in a smaller frame and the discoloration of it is visible when you open the passe partout (see photos).

Painter Wilhelm Alexander ('Willem') Knip was born on 31 January 1883 in Amsterdam. He died on 28 October 1967 in Blaricum. Willem Knip was a painter, draftsman, watercolourist and pastelist.
Background Willem Knip

Willem Knip was a son of Wilhelm Alexander Knip (1856-1917) and Christina Jacoba Schultz (1859-xxxx). His father was a swimming instructor by profession and came from Baden, Germany. The family consisted of five children and lived in Amsterdam.

Willem Knip studied at the Quellinus School of Applied Arts in Amsterdam from 1897 to 1900, with painter Jan Visser junior (1856 to 1938). During this period he also worked in the studio of Chris Lebeau (1878 to 1945). He then studied at a private academy in Paris from 1901 to 1902.

In 1905 Willem Knip settled for the first time in the village of Laren. He rented part of the “Vlasschuur” there, where he set up a studio together with other artists. In 1912 he had a house with his own studio built on the Jagersweg. In that year Willem married Maria Anna Hulstede (1888-1966) from Amsterdam on 1 October in Bussum. Around 1921 he settled at the Eemnesserweg 1057 in Laren.

After 1921 Willem Knip temporarily works and lives in many places in France, Italy and Spain. His use of colour then became lighter and airier. He then painted, pastelled and watercoloured mainly landscapes, harbours and cityscapes.

In the early 1930s, he had a new house designed by architect HC Elzinga. This large detached house was built in 1934 at Torenlaan 57 in Blaricum. The facade stone above the bay window, with the inscription 'De Knip', refers to the first owner Willem Knip.

On August 3, 1966, Maria Anna dies. Ten months later, Willem Knip marries Stijntje Horst in Blaricum on May 23, 1967. Willem dies not long after.
