Willi Kissmer is geboren op 24 december 1951 in Duisberg, Duitsland.
Kissmers creatieve inslag uit zich al op vroege leeftijd. In eerste instantie in de muziekwereld waar hij gitaar speelde in een rockband. Op 20-jarige leeftijd besluit de kunstenaar echter zijn horizon te verbreden en begint hij aan de opleiding Grafische kunst aan de Folkwang Art School.
Tijdens zijn opleiding krijgt Willi Kissmer de mogelijkheid een eigen stijl van werken te ontwikkelen en zijn kennis van diverse complexe productietechnieken te verdiepen. Het duurt niet lang of het werk van de bevlogen Duitse kunstenaar valt ook de kunstwereld op en de eerste exposities waarin zijn werk wordt getoond zijn al snel een feit.
Willi Kissmer maakt bij de productie van zijn werk vaak gebruik van een combinatie van etstechnieken: aquatint, droge naald en mezzotint. Het werk van de kunstenaar is doorgaans figuratief en sensueel van aard. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een prachtige spanning die de door hem gemanipuleerde lichtval teweegbrengt op zijn object waarbij hij doorgaans het spel van model, lichtval en kledingstukken verkiest boven geheel naakt.
Het werk van Willi Kissmer wordt inmiddels geëxposeerd in de meest vooraanstaande galerieën van Europa, America en Rusland.
