Gijs Bakker (1942)


Gijs Bakker studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam (now: Gerrit Rietveld Academy) and at the Konstfackskolan in Stockholm. In the 1960s, Bakker worked as a design assistant at Van Kempen & Begeer. Together with his partner Emmy van Leersum, he designed industrial and traditional materials for the Jewelery Atelier, with which they experimented with different shapes and concepts. Since the 1960s he has been working on various projects such as Strip Chair, Shadow Jewelry and Plastic Soup.

In 1993 Bakker founded Droog in collaboration with Renny Ramakers, in 1996 he was co-founder of Chi Ha Paura…? (Since 2013: CHP…?). In addition, Bakker works as a teacher and since 2009 as the creative director of the HAN Gallery in Taiwan.
