Reijer Cornelis Joseph Godefrooij (1911-1942)

Artist

Reijer Cornelis Joseph Godefrooij was born in the Vogelenbuurt in Utrecht on March 17, 1911. He was the eighth child of Nette Rijkenberg and Matth_ Godefrooij. He is named after his grandmother's life companion, Reijer Vorst, who was still caring for this woman at that time. After the father had gone bankrupt twice and had spent most of the fortune of his wife's family and his own family, the family had to 'flee' from the Zaanstreek in 1909 and Reijer was born in Utrecht. Three years later in 1914 another girl came, his sister Suze (my mother). In 1915 his father died. The oldest girl Jo had been out of the house since she was 15. The family was led by Tecla, 18 years the second oldest. And when she enters the monastery in 1919, this is taken over by Coba, then 18 years. The mother is weak and sickly, she has lupus. And she never learned to handle money. As she was first dominated by her husband, she will remain so for the rest of her life by her daughters. Mother is a very good cook and craftsman and she is also a good nanny for the little ones, but she will never even be allowed to do the household errands herself. And all decisions about relocations, education for the younger children, etc. are taken by the daughter who reigns with an iron hand.1The main thing was: ?to hold the position? and the immaculate honor of the family in the Roman Catholic Church. The father soon becomes a martyr, having died so early because he had been competed to death by the confection that then arose. The stories about it became stronger and more detailed over the years. So the younger children didn't know any better and the older ones started to believe it themselves. The youngest children suffer from the deep poverty and strict, demanding authority of Coba. They are afraid of her. Until their death, these boys will do anything for their little sister and want to protect her. It is likely that around 1915 grandmother Godefrooij (Jo Teunissen) or one of her older children arranged for the three youngest boys to be photographed. That was normal if you belonged to a certain class. The two older brothers go to the monastery. Reijer turns out to be very good at drawing and gets a scholarship for the Rijks Academie.
