Theo van DOESBURG (Utrecht 1883 - Davos 1931)
Theo van Doesburg was a Dutch painter, architect and art critic who became known as the founder of the art magazine and the artists' movement De Stijl of the same name. He was self-taught and started publishing about art early in his life. Kandinsky was much admired by him. He also painted a lot himself, in an abstract-geometric way, in which he was also influenced by the constructivism that came from Russia. In 1917, together with Anthony Kok and Piet Mondriaan, he founded the magazine 'De Stijl', after which he traveled through Europe to promote the 'De Stijl' movement. Due to a rift in the 1920s, Van Doesburg separated from De Stijl. In 1930 he came up with a new style and a new art concept, Concrete Art. Van Doesburg is known as someone who enthusiastically promoted Dutch art.
