Ekke Kleima werd in 1926 lid van de Groninger Ploeg. Na vijf jaar werd zijn band met dit kunstenaarscollectief losser, maar hij hield contact met Jan Altink, Jan Wiegers, Hendrik Werkman en Job Hansen. De laatste ontwierp een huis voor Kleima, waar hij in 1930 ging wonen. De kunstenaar schilderde voornamelijk landschappen, maar ook stillevens, portretten en naakten, aanvankelijk in expressionistische, later in een meer impressionistische stijl. In de jaren '30 en '40 maakte Kleima eveneens beelden, soms in terracotta, maar vooral in hout. Ook maakte hij enige tijd grafiek.
