Gerd Winter (Groß-Gerau, Hesse, 1951) is a German visual artist.
From 1979 to 1984, Winter studied painting at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main with Thomas Bayrle, Ernst Caramelle, Raimer Jochims and Hermann Nitsch. In 1993, Winter was awarded the title of master student by the Städelschule. Since 1995 he has been a member of the Darmstadt Secession. Since the mid-1990s, Winter's work has been based on the tradition of color field painting, which emerged from Abstract Expressionism in the US. Their main representatives are Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Clyfford Still. Representatives of this direction, which is often referred to as "essential painting", is concerned with creating "pure" painting with a calm, contemplative effect. It is important for Winter to use his photographs to counter the 'noise' of the present with something contemplative. It is a painting that has grown over time. Artistic intention meets 'planned' coincidence.
