Beautiful harbor view by Marius the Younger
This watercolor by the well-known artist Marius de Jongere (pseudonym of Martinus Drulman, 1912-1977) dates from his artistic heyday, the fifties and sixties.
It was precisely in those years that Rotterdam grew into the largest port city in the world. This painting shows the feverish activity of the harbour. We see the sturdy ships of the high seas, Rhine barges, as well as the cranes and grain elevators in the bustling harbour.
Marius the Younger achieved world fame with his work. The Greek shipping magnate Onassis ordered 28 canvases from him and the American president Lyndon Johnson visited him in his painting studio in Hilligersberg in Rotterdam and bought five of his works there.
